The South Asianist [South Asian studies - online open access journal]

The Centre for South Asian Studies at the University of Edinburgh has launched a new online, open access journal of South Asian studies, named The South Asianist.

It is an interdisciplinary academic periodical intended to spur critical debate on social, environmental, cultural, linguistic, religious, political and economic aspects of South Asia. At its core is the felt need to counter the distancing effect that stilted, formulaic academic writing often creates. Provocative, peer-reviewed essays and reviews will be complimented by video vignettes that include interviews as well as mini-documentaries that seek to reflect the energy of ethnographic work.

The inaugural issue is entitled ”Marginalities and Aspirations” will be unveiled during a special event honouring public health practitioner and human rights defender Dr. Binayak Sen (photo) on Thursday 14 June 2012 at the University of Edinburgh. The full issue will be available on July 1st.

Connected to the journal, The South Asianist Blog has also been created to follow more week-to-week activities of fieldwork. Thus is run by a dedicated Blog Editor and a team of regular contributors including the Field Editor.
